The thought of penning this down is not from the fact that the expectation or the lack of it, turned into reality but the fact that the way things have been turning out lately was what prompted me to this.
Last week was the supposedly the day on which the big secret was to be let known in our organization. We had a very tough year, of which the business line fared the worst and our business the worst of the line. Therefore there was no expectation on a broad level, but still a lot of interpretation was going on the fact as to what was likely to be.
Not a day goes without fail when some way or the other one is not reminded of the fact that you are lucky to be having a chair to cling on and that should be good enough. An environment of mystery prevails at the workplace with lack of proper communication on issues which should be very normal to be talked about in better times.
Any information is not passed on through formal channels. Last few months has seen internal restructuring, people being asked to leave etc. All these are developments which not only impact the concerned employee directly but also the team as it leads to uncertainty. The basic minimum expectation in these case is to be humane in the manner one communicates to the impacted employees and then to the team. Worse off, the management justifies these steps by pulling down the employee at times- which impacts the morale all around as these news filter in and leave a bitter taste of all.
After this, every one pretends as if nothing has happened and tries to move on. It’s like an eerie calm which prevails in the system and because of the rough environment around, there has been no reaction as yet. But what this has ensured is that it has strengthened the resolve in a negative way within the team.
The pay outs are out and the fact that it has been disappointing to a wider floor may not be an overstatement. Personally, had no expectations with the year partly due to the bad year but also because knowing a bit about the system over the past couple of years. The day was any other day and decided to move on immediately thereafter with life and work as the more one thinks, there is that much of disappointment.
The silver lining is that there is a little less pressure that one can afford to take and therefore has time for other things like family, oneself and friends which probably is far more important in reality.
